Course 301 - History of Urban Missions (3 credits) 

An introduction to the history of urban ministry and the unique role of the gospel rescue mission movement. The course begins with the early history urban ministry and leads up to the present state of the movement as represented by the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions. Includes a study of the scriptures that solidly support the efforts of God's people to work among the poor and to reach the city. Assignments are intended to lead the student into a deeper investigation of what God's Word has to say about rescue mission ministry.

Learning Objectives for this Course

Week One

• To introduce the student to the content and purpose of this course.
• To give the student an opportunity to become acquainted with the instructor and other students who are involved in this course.

Week Two

• To examine the Biblical basis for urban ministry.
  
• To continue readings in the book Salvation in the Slums in order to learn more about the early efforts of evangelicals to reach out to the city.

Week Three

• To introduce the student to the distinctives of rescue missions and their unique role in reaching the city.
  
• To introdude the student to the life and work of David Nasmith, founder of the City Mission or Glasgow, Scotland.
  
• To help the student to appreciate the unique contributions of women to inner city missions by reading the book, Women Who Changed the Heart of the City.

Week Four

• To introduce the student to the significant rescue mission leaders of the past.
• To give the student an opportunity to share thoughts about this week's readings with the class.

Week Five

• To examine some of the spiritual and methodological distintives that make rescue ministry unique.
• To introduce the student to the roots of the International Union of Gospel Rescue Missions and some of its original purposes.

Week Six

• To help the student to understand the importance of developing a history for the local rescue ministry .
• To assign the major written project for this course; the development of a written history of the local rescue ministry - and provide concrete steps to developing it.
• To continue readings that highlight the important contributions of women to the field of urban ministry.
• Further explore the roots of the International Union of Gospel Rescue Missions and introduce the student to more of its early leaders.

Week Seven

• To introduce the student to the work of John Perkins and his approach to urban ministry.
• To take a final look at the role of women in reaching the city for Christ by completing the readings from the book,  Women Who Changed the Heart of the City by Delores Burger
• To continue working on the final project for this course, a brief history of the local rescue ministry.
• To give students an opportunity to share with the class about the beginnings of the rescue ministry with which they are associated.

Week Eight

• To give the student an overview of the current state of the rescue mission movement.
• To help the student evaluation his/her own rescue mission or ministry as it compares to other member ministries of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions.
• To summarize the learning experiences of this course.
• To review the material covered by taking a comprehensive final examination.
• To give students the opportunity to provide input on this course.
